The Perfect German Meal

Let's get real here for a second, making the perfect German meal can be very time consuming. Growing up, we had a full German meal for special occasions, such as Christmas Eve.  Now that I don't live with my parents anymore,it is difficult to find the occasion to spend all day cooking for. Luckily, I have an awesome Grandma who has given me "fast" and easy German recipes if I don't have the time to make the full German meal like my Mom always did.  Unfortunately "fast" still means that you need to have some time to cook so this isn't a meal that you could plan last minute. Although it may take some time, you definitely need to try it! Need some comfort food?  This is for you!  This post may be a little longer than my others but I am going to give you the 3 things you need to have a German meal...pork, red cabbage, and dumplings!  The following three recipes are what I used to make my simple, easy, and "fast" German Meal!

Pork
Ok, I kind of cheated on this one.  I could have bought pork chops and made them in the oven but I really didn't feel like doing that. So instead, I bought a pre-marinated pork roast that I could just throw in the crock pot! The crock pot is my best friend and all you have to do when you buy these is add water and cook it on low for about 5 hours.  Super easy to throw together and you can do a million other things while it is cooking.  They are quite tasty also if I do say so myself!

Red Cabbage
Ingredients:
.............................................................................................................................
1 Head Red Cabbage, sliced
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
3 Apples, diced
2 Cups Water
2/3 Cup Vinegar
3 Tablespoons Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Salt

Directions:
.............................................................................................................................
1. Heat oil in pan.
2. Add all ingredients into the pan.
3. Cook until apples are tender.

Potato Dumplings
Ingredients:
.............................................................................................................................
6 Medium Potatoes
2 Eggs
1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
1 Cup Flour

Directions:
.............................................................................................................................
1. Wash, peel, and boil potatoes.  Grate or mash and allow to cool
2.  Ad Eggs, flour, and salt
3. Form into balls and drop into boiling water
4. Cook for 30 minutes, uncovered (they should "dance" in the water)

Gravy for Dumplings:
We just bought the packet to make Pork Gravy.  It is a powder and all you have to do is add water!  Super easy and a perfect fit for the dumplings!
